Times Like These...

Today was a good day. Money was made, commissions were paid, and battles were fought... but more importantly, the community came back to life. To an extent anyway. It's times like these that get me teary eyed.

Recommendation: Do your part to get the community outpour going again...Just like the good ol days.

Long: Foo Fighters and Option Addicts.

Short: Pikers

Disclaimer: I might be able to get the Foo Fighters to play at the Option Addict event in Vegas early next year. Details pending...

Vegas? Early next year? Do tell....

Jeff,
Nice move. A few days ago ARTY said we needed to make the blog more about him. I think starting a new thread as soon as he posts is the perfect response. It shows supreme confidence in your manhood, not arrogance.

I'm all in for the Vegas OA-athon.

Tue, November 6, 2007 at 05:20PM | Unregistered CommenterChris and Catherine

Okay, another stupid question from the rookie:

What's the ticker symbol that tracks the S&P? I use $DJI to track the Dow (as TOS does not recognize $INDU for a quick quote). What's the symbol for the S&P?

I typed this question into the IT question box, but it didn't give me a ticker, just general information about the S&P...

Tue, November 6, 2007 at 05:25PM | Unregistered CommenterKrystal

Krystal, is it not $SPX?

Vegas event I am all in fo sho, gonna do that FO SHO.

I should just start referencing movies like this in all my posts and see if anyone picks them up, which most won't and I'll just continue to look like a moron. HAHAHAHA.

Ben

Tue, November 6, 2007 at 05:30PM | Unregistered CommenterBen

Ben, TOS tells me that that symbol does not exist... :(

Tue, November 6, 2007 at 05:32PM | Unregistered CommenterKrystal

If it takes more Arty content to get my readers back and involved, I'll do it.

Tue, November 6, 2007 at 05:39PM | Unregistered CommenterOptionAddict

Krystal,
TOS is obviously having brain seizures. $SPX is the S&P 500 symbol. Call and complain. If you bat your eyelashes I understand you can get all your commissions back for the whole year. And a free pen. Maybe a monkey, too.

Tue, November 6, 2007 at 05:40PM | Unregistered CommenterChris and Catherine

Krystal,

Just try SPX, it works like a charm.

Jim

Tue, November 6, 2007 at 05:45PM | Unregistered Commenter2020

Chris,

I tried! I called TOS. I batted my eyelashes, asked for a refund, a free pen and a monkey. They hung up.....go figure.

Tue, November 6, 2007 at 05:46PM | Unregistered CommenterSean M.

Oh, I meant to say I am all in for Vegas. I hate Vegas but I love OA's. By then I will be swimming in profits. You can recognize me at the craps table. I am the guy with the huge row of chips. Those would be Doritos by the way. I only gamble with carbohydrates.

Tue, November 6, 2007 at 05:50PM | Unregistered CommenterSean M.

With TOS screwing up today, I'd really like to spank that monkey.

Tue, November 6, 2007 at 05:52PM | Unregistered CommenterCPT 1Lot

Jim, SPX worked! Thanks a bunch.

And you too, Chris...thanks for NOTHING! :)

I'm going to put my kids to bed; hubby's outta town and here I am with NO HELP! Sheesh!...

Tue, November 6, 2007 at 05:52PM | Unregistered CommenterKrystal

Jeff,

We're all here. Somewhere. Before, we were all in the same room, kinda like a studio apartment. Now that we're in this big house it's sometimes hard to tell who is home.

Tue, November 6, 2007 at 05:55PM | Unregistered CommenterDoji Girl

C2
All right already. If it can't be more about me I understand. I get the gist when Jeff re threads right after a masterful Arty post.

But you have to understand I have been busy conducting "BETA" (also used as a term for problem solving information gathering) to find great "natural resources" in Idaho for Eric.

Jeff,
I of course am also trying to find a good trading accountant to handle my huge tax burden I have found myself facing. Yes it is based on your stupid watch lists I choose to place trades from. It is "Times Like These" -- Oh I just wish there could be more.

Long live the BLOG! I have been a slacker -- I FEEL SHAME

Cheers,
Arty

Tue, November 6, 2007 at 05:57PM | Unregistered CommenterARTY

DG,

Excellent analogy. I feel the same way.

Tue, November 6, 2007 at 06:17PM | Unregistered CommenterSean M.

Doji ... the above statement is ABSOLUTELY the BEST analogy of what this new blog is all about ....I have always liked a big house with rooms .. never liked the studio apt ....

This new blog is rockin' and more new folks are showing up than I have ever seen pour in at once .....Great stuff Jeff!

Tue, November 6, 2007 at 06:18PM | Unregistered CommenterBenton

A ten minute CAST with no emails, smells like perfection if it is lead by Jeff and Eric. Loved having you guys back. Anything over 20 minutes with the other guys is really difficult and over 30 minutes forget it.

Well, all TOS did for me was fix a trade for me and send me a bunch of I am so sorry emails.

DJ, that was perfect too. I have not made it to the chit chat as I just do not have time. I miss you all though.

Tue, November 6, 2007 at 06:20PM | Unregistered CommenterBob (and Pam)

Jeff, when you get a minute can you comment on the PH dividend coming up...is that coming drop in the stock price factored into the options, or should we sell early?

Tue, November 6, 2007 at 06:30PM | Unregistered CommenterThe Phoenix

Chris,
I did not bat my eyelashes...I cried.

:-)

Krystal,
Your questions are not dumb. You ask the things that I am too chicken to. :-)

Tue, November 6, 2007 at 06:41PM | Unregistered CommenterLaney

We are happy, happy campers!!! You are back, even if it isn't every day, :-( but here is what I sent to LEE Barba, they need to break out of their antiquated mindsets....you both are gifted and we are the giftees. We all love you and what you do, keep the senses humor, it becomes you.

Dear Mr. Barba,

Please, please bring back Jeff Kohler and Eric Utley……….the others are not worthy!! We listened to them just about every day and are NOT HAPPY to see the new wannabees; like they say if it ain’t broke don’t fix it!!! Yeah, we know things change, but you change for the better, not the worse. As PHD students, with a whole lot invested here, we implore you to bring em back at whatever the cost….you won’t be sorry if you do.

Thanks,

The H___s Investool PHD Students

Chris,

I missed your "welcome back" on the last thread....just wanted to say thanks - glad to be back....sorta. I don't have any trading thing to talk about, don't use think or swim, so probably shouldn't be posting here...sorry :)

Tue, November 6, 2007 at 07:19PM | Unregistered CommenterJodi

I missed you too, Jodi. :-)

Welcome back!

What should you expect when a break out like CRK had today when it opened 15 points up then settled at 4.50 up from Mondays close. Is expectation for it to be strong on the up side?
Thanks for this blog and I love Vegas idea!!
Mark

Tue, November 6, 2007 at 07:40PM | Unregistered CommenterHans23

DG good analogy on the blog. I think there are as many posts. Its just taking me a few minutes on which room to go to.

Vegas sounds terrific. I won't schedule another trip so I don't tie up those dates. For now though, one more day of tradig then I'm off to Mexico for a few days. Not sure I can post from there but I'll give it a try.

Jeff, futures would be a good topic. I added that to my account a couple of weeks ago and think it is much better than trading index options.

Fellow Addicts, I don't know where
to post this dialogue, it isn't fair,

should I put this on the Daily Blog site
or in the Chit Chat Room, would that be right?

The Trader Chat room is off limits
'cause Raimo is the blog's Admiral Nimitz,

The Chit Chat room is so demeaning
I feel the group needs an intervening,

how about we make a group decision
to avoid the communique division,

and agree to post under "Daily Blog"
and ignore the Chit Chat monologue,

and consent to just two posting domains
Trader Chat and the Daily Blog chain,

we unite as a group which once was unique
and many stocks, as a group we critique,

and along the way we share something personal
which allows us to be more devotional,

to each other, We share each of our successes
some based on fact, some are just guesses,

but we certainly share in the joy of a breakout
just a Brett does, in line, at CMG takeout!@!

I see you've returned and poem you dare
yet no "poemal" attack have you no hair?

my long time nemisis I'll cut you slack
poem where you want and I got your back

but this latest rhyme and no dig at me
I must question Phantom of your worthy

But your timing is good cause sitting at REE
the stock you made mention, was CMG

My acronyms you see they do work
even for those who come here to lurk

I've been holding back I must now confess
another trading rule, is RTTLGS

but for you i suspect RTTLGS will not apply
In that arena, I think you've run dry

One of my rules I've kept for myself
I am beginning to think you look like an elf

Good to see you my old poeming friend
And for google i see no stop to its trend..

Tue, November 6, 2007 at 09:17PM | Unregistered CommenterBob Raimo

Okay, Raimo, I give up. I haven't a clue and I'm pretty good with acronyms. But this one, IDGI.

Raimo, yes, I have hair
mostly on my back, I know its not fair,

but my barber, I share with C2
the clippers, they're clogged, jammed up like BIDU,

now that I have had my haircut
I can now reflect on your life, you're in a rut,

your acronym, RTTLGS
stands for Raimo's truly tortured life gets serious,

you have a way of offending fellow bloggers
you have the grace of Canadian Loggers (sorry Chris),

you truly are a bull in a China Shanty
you even insulted VA Beach Girl's Panty,

I hope Kim gave you a verbal lashing
and finished with some NRA bashing,

because although you have hunting acumen
you need female training to become more human,

so give in Raimo, let your female side show
open up the tear ducts, let it flow,

we all understand about your demeanor
it's all a cover up for your declining WNR.

Wow, nice to wake up to down 150 futures. This market is totally lost. Up, Down, Up and Down. Unreal.

Wed, November 7, 2007 at 04:03AM | Unregistered CommenterTHE PHOENIX

It seems to be getting worse now. Did war break out while we slept? Now I'm worried that my delta neutral position is not enough. And of course I dumped my SPY puts when the market started to rally yesterday.

DG-

If you're in good trades, I wouldn't worry. You'll quickly move to delta negative after the open and also I have found that, though it helps to be delta negative on days like this, some of my best days have come when my delta is inverse to what the market does that day. Sometimes the market drags down good trades, but it is a market of stocks. As long as support isn't broken, this will just be a speedbump for some stocks.

Wed, November 7, 2007 at 06:25AM | Unregistered CommenterTHE PHOENIX

Lis,

It asked me for that too. But I just closed my browser and opened it again. Then it didn't ask me again. Don't know why, but it worked --- you are talking about the watchlist video right?

Wed, November 7, 2007 at 06:31AM | Unregistered CommenterJodi

Jodi,
I think she may be talking about the new Blog Tutorial Video. I had the same issue.

REgarding CRK, I thought the same as you until I pulled a one day cahrt and saw that there was only one trade of 200 shares at 15 points up the rest were at where the stock traded most of the day.

I guess if you were not in the stock before the gap and you take it here you run the risk of finding support at previous levels. or set a tight stop

Wed, November 7, 2007 at 06:33AM | Unregistered CommenterDAVIDS

td,
I bailed on SYK yesterday. Same reasons as you. I took a bigger loss than I should have considering I thought I'd gotten in at REE. Guess not.

Interesting about the futures. I'm still even on my calls and puts so I'm hoping for neutral day or better. I tried to get out of MDC yesterday but couldn't get the price I wanted. That may turn out to be a good thing.

Raimo and PP... what can I say? After a 2 week hiatus you've come back strong.

DG perfect analogy. I think we're discovering that the living room and the kitchen are our favourites. At least no one's sneaking off to the bedroom.

It sure looks like GLD would be a good place to be this next little while.

CME could be a good pickup today.

Wed, November 7, 2007 at 06:34AM | Unregistered CommenterChris and Catherine

Ok, I am going to give my crack analysis of the S&P 500 here. Feel free to adapt what I have said or tell me I'm full of it. This is what I see...

Looking at 20 year chart, there was an Inverse H&S that occurred roughly between 2001 and 2004. The Price target on that would have been 1550 ish. Exactly where we fell from this past summer. Pattern was completed.

When we fell from 1550, down to 1410 ish and then back up, The S&P formed a symm triangle. Which broke out to the upside with a large candle and consequently the first fed cut of .5. If you draw that triangle you will see we are now retesting the apex or there about.

What I don't love about the chart, it that on the large red candle from Oct 19, we fell through the support line of the bottom trend line of the triangle, and we couldn't break back through it on Oct 31 when it tried, thus making a new lower high. Now we have retested again, so is this going to be another lower high, or will we complete the symmetrical triangle. Only time will tell.

Or, maybe its all in my head, and I am talking out of my a$$

Wed, November 7, 2007 at 06:44AM | Unregistered CommenterJodi

Jeff,

Vegas! sounds good. Is this your subtle way of asking me to make a phone call to a family friend?

Wed, November 7, 2007 at 07:04AM | Unregistered CommenterSarah

Ahhh...all is right with the world now that PP is back.

TD,
SYK...I sold when it both failed my trend line over the last few trading days and yesterday was my time stop on the option play. The option hadn't made at least half its move to $79.00 within half the time I had set, which was 4 weeks so I got out. Hope this helps.

CME - Based upon the "Bull Flag" CME has a chance at $690 - $700 in the next month. I have been in for several days and making good $$$$

Davids,
I was excited because I was in CRK and saw the big gap!!
It hasn't happened often enough for me that I am not sure if I should take the profit and run or sit tight and let it run if the market will let it.
